The Nizza DOCG is considered the “diamond” of the Monferrato. It is a red wine with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status, produced exclusively from 100% Barbera grapes. The name “Nizza” was officially adopted starting with the 2014 vintage, released on the market in 2016, replacing the former designation Barbera d’Asti Superiore Nizza, which had been in use since 2000.

The production area is limited to 18 municipalities in the province of Asti, surrounding the town of Nizza Monferrato. The strict production regulations require the use of only the best-exposed vineyards (south-east, south, and south-west facing), while excluding valley-floor sites. For this reason, Nizza DOCG is produced by only around 80 wineries, with a total annual production of approximately one million bottles.

The grape harvest is carried out exclusively by hand, and the grapes used must come from the same vineyard. In addition, enrichment of the natural alcohol content is not permitted, and the minimum alcohol level cannot be lower than 13%. As a result, in less favorable vintages, Nizza DOCG may not be produced at all.

The Nizza production regulations require a minimum aging of 18 months, six of which must be in wood.
